An original voice in European jazz

Félix Zurstrassen is a Belgian electric and double bassist and composer whose artistic identity is defined by instrumental mastery and a sophisticated compositional voice. Rooted in modern and contemporary jazz, his musical world draws on influences from classical music, pop and world music. As both a bandleader and sideman, he has developed a wide-ranging career, collaborating with numerous leading musicians from the Belgian and international music scenes.

At the heart of his work as a composer is NOVA, an international project bringing together Franco-Brazilian guitarist Nelson Veras, Dutch saxophonist Ben van Gelder, British pianist Kit Downes and Belgian drummer Antoine Pierre around his original compositions. Built on a constant dialogue between composition and collective improvisation, NOVA’s music leaves ample room for spontaneity and the individual voices of its musicians.

Through three releases on Igloo Records — NOVA (2020), NOVA LIVE (2023) and Elusive (2024) — the project reflects a continuous musical evolution, from its original trio format to an international quintet.

This ongoing development has recently been enriched by collaborations with two leading figures of American jazz, pianist Aaron Parks and drummer Jeff Ballard. Following their first appearance together in Luxembourg in 2024, their participation in a European tour in March 2026 marked a new chapter in NOVA’s development.

Alongside his work as a composer and bandleader, Félix Zurstrassen has built an extensive career as a sideman. Recipient of the Sabam Jazz Award – Young Talent in 2017, he has established himself as a prominent figure on the Belgian jazz scene, collaborating with artists including Magic Malik, Jozef Dumoulin, Reinier Baas, Stéphane Galland, James Maddren, Jean-Paul Estiévenart, Fabrizio Cassol and Bram De Looze.

His versatility has also led him to explore other musical genres, notably as a longtime member of Belgian pop singer Typh Barrow’s band.
