Félix Zurstrassen is an electric bassist and double bassist whose artistic identity is defined by instrumental mastery and sophisticated writing, rooted in modern and contemporary jazz while drawing on influences from classical music, pop and world music. As a bandleader, he brings together leading musicians from the international jazz scene to explore his musical world. His versatility and musical sensitivity make him a sought-after sideman in both jazz and pop.

He discovered the electric bass at the age of 14 and quickly developed a passion for the instrument. Jazz and improvisation soon became central to his musical practice.

From 2005 to 2010, he studied at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels with Michel Hatzigeorgiou, graduating with highest distinction. He then turned his attention increasingly towards the double bass. After a year of study with Jean-Louis Rassinfosse, he continued his training at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels (Koninklijk Conservatorium Brussel) in the class of French double bassist Christophe Wallemme, graduating with highest distinction in 2013.

In addition to electric bass and double bass, he also plays classical and jazz piano, as well as drums. This multi-instrumental approach informs his understanding of harmony, rhythm, phrasing and musical interaction, shaping his work as both an improviser and a composer.

At the heart of his work as a composer and bandleader is NOVA, his international project rooted in modern and contemporary jazz. Alongside longtime collaborators such as guitarist Nelson Veras, saxophonist Ben van Gelder, pianist Kit Downes and drummer Antoine Pierre, he has developed a distinctive musical world in which composition and improvisation are shaped by constant collective interplay. Through several albums and an evolving line-up, NOVA has established itself as the main expression of his artistic identity.

The project has also opened up to new collaborations, notably with two leading figures of American jazz, pianist Aaron Parks and drummer Jeff Ballard. Their participation in a European tour in March 2026 marked a new chapter in NOVA’s development, as its music continues to evolve through the encounters and distinctive musical personalities that bring it to life.

Félix Zurstrassen has quickly established himself as one of the leading bassists of his generation on the Belgian jazz scene. He collaborates with a wide range of artists and ensembles, spanning jazz, funk, pop and rock. In 2017, he received the Sabam Jazz Award – Young Talent. The jury recognised his central role in the emerging Belgian jazz scene, describing him as “a focal point and rallying force for the entire young Belgian jazz scene, contributing to the key projects driving it forward.”

As a sideman, he performs in a wide variety of musical settings. He has worked with Belgian pop singer Typh Barrow for many years and is a member of saxophonist Simon Comté’s quartet, alongside pianist Wajdi Riahi and drummer Antoine Pierre.

His career has also led him to take part in several notable projects on the Belgian jazz scene, including Urbex, the band led by drummer Antoine Pierre, and Conference of the Birds, under the direction of saxophonist Fabrizio Cassol.
